The full list of semifinalists are below, with Bay Area nominations in bold: Best New Restaurant To read more about the awards and to see past James Beard Award winners, head to the site at /awards. The James Beard Awards are in its 30th year, and the winners are set to be announced at a gala on May 4 in Chicago. The awards are still in the early stages with the final list of Restaurant and Chef Award nominees to be shared on March 25, but an encouraging start for the Bay Area. The group said in a press release the reason for changing the categories and regional designations was "to recognize changing population data, restaurant demographics, and culinary trends."

The Northwest category was restructured and changed to the "Mountain" category, while the Southwest category was restructured after Texas was given its own regional award. California was removed from the previously-named "Best Chef: West" category, which has been dubbed the "Best Chef: Northwest & Pacific" category made up of nominees from Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington. One notable change for the awards include the addition of the "Best Chef: California" category ("Best Chef: Texas" was also added this year). Corey Lee (Benu), Kim Alter (Nightbird), Gabriela Cámara (Cala), Brandon Jew (Mister Jiu's), Mourad Lahlou (Mourad), Joshua Skenes (Angler), Pim Techamuanvivit (Kin Khao) are among the stellar chefs landing on the semifinalist list yet again. Returning semifinalists include restaurant and bar favorites such as Swan Oyster Depot and Saison (both nominated for Outstanding Hospitality), Quince (Outstanding Restaurant) and Trick Dog (Outstanding Bar Program). Gaby Maeda with State Bird Provisions landed on the semifinalist list for the first time for Rising Star Chef of the Year, along with Val M. Among the San Francisco restaurants receiving their first nods on the semifinalist list are House of Prime Rib (Outstanding Restaurant) Beit Rima and Verjus (Best New Restaurant) The Morris (Outstanding Wine Program).
